Smiling
I’m starting to feel it… that restless angst from family tension and excessive smothering while I’m home for break. I love my family and I love being home, but sometimes communication is difficult if, you know, people don’t listen. I’m so thankful that I have Sissy and that gym where I can run off all my not-so-teenage angst-angst-angst.
This angsty day in particular took a blow to my self esteem. I know this stuff shouldn’t bother me, but something about this person being my mom always has an effect on me.
I was in a good cleaning groove, shuffling through old recipes and sheet music when she came in to check up on me. She told me that I should get my teeth shaved because they are too long (I Googled it and the technical term is “enameloplasty”).
“You would look prettier if you fixed your teeth,” she told me in Vietnamese.
I really didn’t think my teeth were that bad. Yeah, they’re kind of big, but there is nothing functionally wrong with my teeth. They are straight and clean.
I feel like my smile is all I really have going for me. I smile a lot because I’m a pretty happy person, and a lot of people actually know me for that. If I change that, I won’t have anything (or if I do, it’ll look fake and unnatural).
It’s kind of depressing thinking that my mother wants to change my smile. Well, this is the same person who called me ugly for the scars on my legs and told me to stop singing because I wasn’t any good.
I’m sorry my teeth are too long to attract a heterosexual Asian health professional son-in-law, Mom, but I feel like being natural and flying solo for a while.
